Severe Tooth Pain – While a toothache isn’t necessarily always a dental emergency, if the pain is severe, debilitating, or accompanied by signs of an infection, then it is considered a dental emergency.
While a dull ache that comes and goes is certainly a sign you should get your tooth examined, it doesn’t require urgent treatment so it can wait for the next available appointment. Severe or sharp pain that makes it difficult to eat, limits your ability to function throughout the day, doesn’t respond to pain medication or is accompanied by swelling and an abscess is a sign that something is seriously wrong.

Damaged, Loose Tooth, or Knocked-Out Tooth – If you have a chipped or cracked tooth, have suffered from dental trauma that has led to a significant oral injury such as a jaw injury, if your tooth is very loose, or you have lost a tooth, you qualify for an emergency appointment. Damaged, loose, and missing teeth need to be addressed immediately for the best chances of saving the tooth.
